Nightborn is a one-man thrash project from Sweden, who’s influences range from the 80’s thrash giants such as Slayer, Exodus, Metallica, Sepultura to name but a few. Nightborn have managed to dissect the best parts of the 80’s thrash sounds and compile them into one album containing 11 stunning, hard hitting, thrash typhoon! I can certainly hear the bay area thrash influence being the main ingredient into this thrash recipe, with some UK thrash essence thrown in to the mix.
Nightborn kick off their album, Skyless with an instrumental intro that sets the tone for what’s to come, and trust me I usually skip intros, but for some reason I didn’t this time around, glad I left it on! I think the last time I heard an album like this with a huge thrash influence was Legion Of the Damned’s Malevolent Rapture album. There is also a partial European thrash influence on this album, tracks like Bloodgrown Darkness has a very early Sodom riff that dominates until the tempo picks up to warp speed. I must admit that I am having trouble describing the vocals, the best I can offer is Tony Portaro of Whiplash and Ron Reinhardt from Dark Angel (minus the epic screams). Withdrawal of the Sense is an interesting track, a slightly mellow, flowing riff orientated track, still heavy but, more along the lines of Testament’s The Ballad. outstanding guitar work throughout the whole album, very well constructed and well produced and mastered, which one would expect with the renowned producer Jens Bergen (Sepultura, Kreator, Paradise Lost, Katatonia, At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, Opeth, Amon Amarth etc.)
I can strongly recommend the Skyless album to pretty much anyone who is into true metal, thrash metal, For fans of Exodus, Xentrix, Annihilator, Sodom, Kreator,
